Fitted home offices for homes in Fulwell
An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It gives a home in Fulwell a workspace that looks part of the room. Typical reasons to get in touch are an alcove or landing that could take a desk and a room with two jobs to do; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
For occasional working, a small desk on a landing or under the stairs can be enough. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Fulwell, a landing or the space below the stairs could hold a compact desk. Closed storage keeps paperwork tidy. Meters and fuse boards stay reachable.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Home working in Fulwell: local notes
About 34% of the homes in the streets around Fulwell went up before 1919, and about 30% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Fulwell include Chapel in the Wood (Grade I), about 0.5 miles east, and Church of St Michael and St George (Grade II), less than half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Around a third of the homes in the streets around Fulwell (about 30%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs that suits a built-in desk.
If your children go to Stanley Primary School or a school nearby, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework. The wider area includes historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 0.6 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael's, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Questions we are often asked
Is Fulwell in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes, Fulwell is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Does a conservation area in or near Fulwell affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
What happens during the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
Can a home office go in a loft room?
Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.
What affects the cost of fitted home offices
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How square the room is
- How big the furniture is
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?
Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Separate off-the-shelf pieces seldom match in height or depth. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- The desk and shelving are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
