Is bespoke worth it?
With bought furniture you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you pick, either spray painted in the workshop or hand painted. They can match the walls, the woodwork or neither. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, which fitted furniture uses. Every width is made for the room.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Why choose us

Alcove units in Gordon Hill
Alcove units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen part by part. MDF gives smooth doors and panels that take paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted on site, in the colour you choose. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are room to work in an alcove and cupboards in keeping with an older house.
A good share of the homes around Gordon Hill were built in the post-war years, between 1945 and the early 1970s. Rooms from that era are often squarer than in older houses, and many have no chimney breast at all. That makes a full wall of alcove units a strong option, or a recess built out with cupboards either side. Some walls of that age are concrete or blockwork, and the fixings are matched to them.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
- At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square, then talk through the design with you.
- You get a quote in writing for the units, materials and finish.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
- On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.
Before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Questions from Gordon Hill
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gordon Hill station?
Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Gordon Hill?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
How do I get a quote?
Simply use our contact form. It’s useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
Any vent is kept clear in the design. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp. Any existing damp should be dealt with before the units go in.
Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: a spray-painted finish done in our workshop, or a hand-painted finish done on site. Both are in a colour agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
Living-room storage in Gordon Hill
About 30% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Gordon Hill went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 22 entries within half a mile of the centre of Gordon Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in Gordon Hill joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
Close to Enfield Town Park? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as St Faith's Cottage, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. Do you need alcove units in Gordon Hill?
A move into an older home is a common reason. People who have just moved in want storage that suits the age of the house, and the alcoves are an obvious place to start. It is easier to do before the room fills with boxes.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
- A place for a small desk
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
- Somewhere to keep books and records
Forty Hall, about 0.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
What to check before you book
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
