Common questions about alcove units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bush Hill Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

What happens to the chimney vent when alcove units go in?

We design around any vent so it stays open. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry, which protects the units as well as the wall. Any existing damp should be dealt with before the units go in.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even; a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. We measure each alcove carefully during the design visit, then the units are built in our workshop and scribed to the walls when we fit them, which closes the gaps you’d see with standard furniture.

Alcove units in Bush Hill Park

One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It is a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. Desk height and depth are agreed with you. If your home has worn or badly fitted alcove units and bare alcoves beside the fireplace, that’s what alcove units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Bush Hill Park, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Alcove units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

When you need someone else

Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Adjustable shelves

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelving and cabinets can go in an alcove, and they’re normally cheaper. The trouble is normally the gaps: standard sizes seldom match the alcove, and walls that are not straight show up every gap. A bespoke alcove unit is made to your measurements and scribed to the plaster. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves, go through the design and check the route from the street to the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

How to get a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Alcove units for homes in Bush Hill Park

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bush Hill Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and before 1919 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Bush Hill Park is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. About 34% of households in the neighbourhood around Bush Hill Park live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, which suit alcove units built to their exact widths.

If you live in a period home close to St Stephen's Parish Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For families living near The Raglan Junior School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

What prompts alcove units in Bush Hill Park

A bedroom’s alcoves are often the best place for a wardrobe. A fitted alcove cupboard holds clothes without filling the floor.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house
  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
  • Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home

If you live in a flat close to Bush Hill Park station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
