Alcove units in Edmonton: what you get

We fit alcove units across Enfield and the rest of London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and talk through the design. Then you receive a quote, and once you are happy the units are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. If your home has bowed walls and sloping floors and bare alcoves beside the fireplace, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

You might live in a Victorian terrace, a 1930s semi, a mansion block or a recent flat, and your home in Edmonton could be any one of them. Each brings different walls and floors, so the design of alcove units starts with a look at what you have. A period house may need scribing to bowed walls, while a newer flat may need fixings for plasterboard.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Making good damaged walls before fitting
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Scribed side panels
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You tell us which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the layout, materials and finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

Living-room carpentry in Edmonton: local notes

In the area around Edmonton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 29%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Edmonton. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Enfield is no exception. Where a street in Edmonton is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

For families living near Brettenham Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. For a flat near Edmonton Green station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Pymmes Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
  • Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Sort out damp patches before fitting

Fill the shelves gradually and spread heavy things evenly. A full shelf of books is heavier than it looks, and an even load keeps the shelves straight.

Every so often, check that hinges and handles haven’t worked loose, and adjust any door that starts to catch.

Could you do it yourself?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF does not have a grain to show through the paint, so a painted finish looks even and calm. Moisture-resistant MDF is what we use for fitted work.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s ideal for shelves and the boxes behind the doors. Its layered edge can be painted or left to show.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Edmonton in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London, and Edmonton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Edmonton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. Many people use one alcove for a desk and the other for cupboards if you want the two sides to differ. We’ll plan the desk around how you work.

Can the two alcove units be different?

It’s entirely your choice. Alcoves are often different widths anyway. They can match in style while doing different jobs.

How do I get a quote?

Just get in touch through our contact form. It’s useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

How tall should alcove units be?

It depends on the room and the look you want. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice, or run to the ceiling for a built-in look. The height is settled at the design visit.
