How we make fitted wardrobes for Gordon Hill

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. If your home has mismatched bedroom furniture and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, fitted wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Many homes around Gordon Hill date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in blocks as well as houses. Rooms from that time can have lower ceilings than period homes, so fitted wardrobes are scaled to suit. In a block of flats, each piece is made in sections that fit the stairs or lift, then assembled in the room.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Gordon Hill station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Gordon Hill?

Yes, Gordon Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in Gordon Hill

The price for your room depends on:

  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking near your home

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. Let us know about any building rules on lifts or working hours at the measuring visit.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Getting a quote

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work isn’t as quick as buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making. Skirting boards stop standalone furniture sitting flat against the wall, which wastes depth and gathers dust. Fitted furniture is scribed over the skirting or set on its own plinth.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
