Alcove units for homes in Enfield Chase
Even a chimney that is been blocked or capped needs some ventilation to help stop damp. Units are planned so any vent stays clear. If there are signs of damp on the chimney breast or in the alcoves, they’re best sorted before fitting, as cupboards fitted over damp walls can suffer. We make alcove units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and toys and paperwork with no proper home.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the walls behind alcove units could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. That’s why every wall is checked during the design visit before the fixings are chosen. With a chimney breast, alcove units normally fill the alcoves; without one, they can run along a whole wall.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bespoke furniture isn’t instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and time in the workshop. In return, the unit is planned for your alcove alone, not the nearest catalogue size. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
Why choose us
- Scribed to uneven walls
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Work across the whole of London
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
Alcove units in Enfield Chase: local notes
About 27% of the homes in the streets around Enfield Chase went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Enfield Chase, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Magdalene (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and Clarendon Cottage (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. All of London, Enfield included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Enfield Chase. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
Close to Enfield Town Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. For families living near Chase Side Primary School, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For a flat near Enfield Chase station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Common questions about alcove units
Is Enfield Chase in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes, we work across Enfield, Enfield Chase included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Enfield Chase?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
How long will the fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help stop damp.
Can the two alcove units be different?
That depends on how you use the room. The two alcoves are often slightly different sizes, so each unit is made to its own measurements. They can share a style while doing different things.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

How we price alcove units
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The width and height of the space
- Parking near your home
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
What we need to know
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.
- You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas, even if the design is only a rough idea so far.
- We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
- You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish.
- The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop.
- We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Arranging a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What we do not do
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
