Alcove units across Hillingdon: what to expect
We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth doors and panels that take paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted on site, in a colour agreed with you. We make alcove units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are somewhere to keep books and records and standard units leaving gaps at the sides.
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You send us a few details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and we arrange a design visit at a time that suits you.
- At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, so you can look it over in your own time.
- Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
- The units are fitted in your home and scribed to follow the walls. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.
How our quotes work
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Living-room carpentry across Hillingdon
Most people in Hillingdon who ask about alcove units want somewhere for books, the TV and the things that pile up. One design can bring those together, made at our workshop and fitted on the days set out in your quote.
About 37% of the homes in Hillingdon went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 25% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. About 37% of homes in Hillingdon date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Interwar front rooms usually have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and alcove units are planned around both. A quarter or more of the homes in Hillingdon (about 25%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of alcove units is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.
The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so we plan access to your home in Hillingdon ahead of fitting day.
Ruislip: The wider area includes historic houses such as Ickenham Hall, about 1.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For a flat near West Ruislip station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Before and after fitting day
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
- Mention parking and access when we visit
- Note the sizes of large things you want to store
- Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice
Make a note of the paint colour used. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place, and it is useful to keep a little of the paint.
Put the heaviest books and objects low down and spread the weight. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for, so tell us at the design visit if a shelf will hold something heavy.
Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?
The depth of an alcove is set by the chimney breast. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. We set the depth to suit the room, whether that is flush with the breast or a little shallower.
Before you hire any carpenter
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
Honest limits
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Any structural work on the chimney breast
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits alcove units in a period room. The colour is agreed with you.
Moisture-resistant MDF
With no grain to show through, MDF keeps the painted surface smooth and even. We choose the moisture-resistant grade for fitted furniture.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Questions we are often asked
Can an alcove unit include a desk?
Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what to expect before we arrive.
Do you work in Hillingdon?
Yes. We cover Hillingdon. To get a quote, message us from the contact page.
Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?
Yes. Each alcove is measured at the design visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We only take on work in London.
