Flats, leases and landlords
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Alcove units in Ruislip
We fit alcove units across Hillingdon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. After that we send a quote in writing, and once you’re happy the units are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. Most enquiries start with bare alcoves beside the fireplace and cupboards in keeping with an older house; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Ruislip, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it is a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan alcove units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the alcove unit we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Alcove units for homes in Ruislip
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Ruislip were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Ruislip, Historic England’s list includes Lady Bankes School (Grade II), under half a mile south, and High Grove House (Grade II), under half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 58% of homes in the streets around Ruislip date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where alcove units go.
If your children go to Warrender Primary School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Close to Church Field Gardens? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is one of the older houses near St Lawrence, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

What affects the cost of alcove units
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- How square the room is
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The overall size of the piece
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.
Getting in touch
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Examples of the look you’re after
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
To get a quote for alcove units in Ruislip, get in touch through our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough sizes. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.
How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
- At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you, checking how far the walls are out of square.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, so you can look it over in your own time.
- We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
- We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Starting with a design visit

Advice
Questions from Ruislip
Is Ruislip in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London, and Ruislip is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Ruislip?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?
It’s up to you. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We go through the options during the design visit.
Can the two alcove units be different?
That is your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, such as the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a written quote after the design visit.
How long are you in the house for the fitting?
The fitting depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what fitting day involves before we start.
Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?
With bought furniture you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you pick, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site. You can match the walls or choose a contrast. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
- Note the sizes of large things you want to store
- Have any damp looked at before the units are made
- Note any vent or air brick on the chimney breast
Doors can settle a little once the units are in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to line the doors up again, so a small gap or rub is easy to correct.
Put coasters or mats under anything that holds water. Dry any spills quickly.
