Alcove units in Kenley, Croydon
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make alcove units for homes in Kenley, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Toys and paperwork with no proper home
- Somewhere to keep books and records
- Tired cupboards in the alcoves
Ask about alcove units in Kenley
Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
How we make alcove units for Kenley
We fit alcove units across Croydon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote, and once you’re happy the units are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. If your home has shelving for books and records and toys and paperwork with no proper home, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Around Kenley, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for alcove units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we’re often asked
I live near Kenley station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Kenley?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you fit a desk into an alcove?
Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. We plan the height and depth with you, with a route left for cables.
Can you build alcove units for alcoves that are not square?
Yes. We measure each alcove carefully at the measuring visit, then the units are built in our workshop and scribed to the walls when we fit them, so there are no tricky gaps.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The units are made in our workshop first, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.
Should I send photos?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Is bespoke worth it?
To be fair, a standalone bookcase or cabinet can go with you to your next home. Fitted alcove units stay with the house and remain when you move on. Which suits you depends on your plans. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Built-in living-room furniture in Kenley
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the area around Kenley, with about 31% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Kenley, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Saints (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Kenley Station House (original 1856 Building) (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Kenley, let us know at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
For a flat near Kenley station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Dollypers Hill, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For families living near Harris Primary Academy Kenley, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Kenley is about 5 miles north of Thornton Heath, part of the London Borough of Croydon. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Kenley is part of that. We cover places right across Croydon.
We make alcove units across CR8 and CR2 for alcove units. Streets in the area include Oaks Road, Park Road and Roke Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for alcove units. Kenley is near the A22; on busy main roads, unloading alcove units takes a little planning. If you are just outside Kenley, we also cover Riddlesdown (1 mile north), Sanderstead (1 mile north-east) and South Croydon (2 miles north). We also make alcove units in nearby places like Thornton Heath (5 miles north), Croydon (3 miles north), Coulsdon (2 miles west), Broad Green (4 miles north), Upper Norwood (7 miles north) and Selhurst (5 miles north).

Our area takes in the homes around Riddlesdown Collegiate, among other places. There is a railway station in Kenley itself: Kenley station. Nearby you will also find Purley War Memorial Hospital (1.3 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Foxley Wood.
How fitting works for alcove units
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas.
- We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent.
- You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish.
- The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop.
- We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted on site, as agreed.
How to prepare
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
- Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
- Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
- Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
Load the shelves evenly rather than piling weight in the middle. Books weigh more than most people expect, and an even load keeps the shelves straight.
Put the heaviest books and objects low down and spread the weight. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for, so tell us at the measuring visit if a shelf will hold something heavy.
How we price alcove units
To work out the quote, we look at:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Spray painting or hand painting
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
Before the design visit
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
