Our fitted wardrobes across CR2
Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and wasted space beside the chimney breast.
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design.
- We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.
What goes into your quote
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- Built around your room
- Finished by spray or by hand
- A design visit, then a written quote
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.
Landmarks near South Croydon
Our area takes in the homes around Duppas Hill, Church of St Augustine and Harris Academy Purley, among other places. Also close by are The Purley Arms (a few minutes’ walk south-west), Purley Oaks Primary School (close by, under half a mile south-east) and Rutherford School (0.8 miles north-east). South Croydon has its own railway station: Sanderstead station. A little further out are St George's Walk (1.4 miles north) and Purley War Memorial Hospital (1.2 miles south-west). Open spaces near South Croydon include Duppas Hill and Roundshaw Downs.
Bedroom storage across CR2
Homes across CR2, Purley, Waddon and South Croydon included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls and floor. The paint finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.
In the CR2 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 24%) and before 1919 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Of the 10 places we have local pages for in CR2, 1 has its centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so access to homes in CR2 is planned beforehand.
South Croydon: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Augustine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Purley Oaks Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in CR2
A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, keeping the room clear.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. That is a real advantage if you’re renting or moving soon. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house.
What to check before you book
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch up.
Hanging rails
We place rails at the heights your clothes need: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.
Before and after fitting day
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.
Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Building work to create a loft room
- Decorating or plastering the room
Questions from CR2
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
How do I get started?
The first step is to tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
What materials do you use?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We talk it through at the design visit.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
