Our fitted wardrobes across CR8

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about too little room for clothes and wasted space beside the chimney breast.

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

What affects the price in CR8

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across CR8

If your bedroom in CR8 has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

The biggest shares of homes in CR8 were built since 2000 (about 26%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. A quarter or more of the homes in the CR8 postcode district (about 26%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. About 47% of households in CR8 live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Purley: For a family home near Christ Church CofE Primary School (Purley), a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Close to Dollypers Hill? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

What we do not do

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:

  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line the doors up again.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood, so they hold their shape.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour before we start.

Questions we are often asked

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What are your fitted wardrobes made from?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.
