Questions from Kenley

I live near Kenley station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Kenley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better. We look at it with you when we measure.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Fitted wardrobes in Kenley: what you get

An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. Most enquiries start with wardrobes that are full to bursting and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Kenley, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. That’s where fitted wardrobes earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

When you need someone else

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Structural changes to the room
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hand-painted finish

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, so it is a good choice for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes. You can paint the edge or leave the layers showing.

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Kenley?

Sometimes it is a change in how a room is used. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage while leaving space to move. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Not enough hanging space
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

For a family home near Harris Primary Academy Kenley, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
