Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns. It’s useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

How we make alcove units for Kensal Town

We fit alcove units across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and go through the design. After that we send a written quote, and once you’re happy the units are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about bowed walls and sloping floors and bare alcoves beside the fireplace.

Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Kensal Town date from before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for alcove units is chosen. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

What alcove units cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
  • Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Questions from Kensal Town

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Queens Park (London) station?

Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Kensal Town?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Can you fit a desk into an alcove?

Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

The fitting depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what to expect before we arrive.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A bespoke unit takes longer to arrive than something from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and time in the workshop. In return, the unit is planned for your alcove alone, rather than the nearest standard size. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

What you get with us

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
  • Note the sizes of large things you want to store
  • Note any vent or air brick on the chimney breast
  • Sort out damp patches before fitting

Fill the shelves gradually and spread heavy things evenly. A full shelf of books is heavier than it looks, so spreading them out helps the shelves stay level.

Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight.

Living-room carpentry in Kensal Town: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 54% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Kensal Town, with about 17% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 51 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kensal Town. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Kensal Town, let us know during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Thomas Kensal Town, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Emslie Horniman's Pleasance? Alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For a flat near Queens Park (London) station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
