How we make fitted wardrobes for W11

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and a bedroom that never feels tidy.

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

What goes into your quote

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.

Arranging a design visit

To make a start, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Bedroom storage across W11

Across W11, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have.

About 64% of the homes in the W11 postcode district went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. More than half of the homes in the W11 postcode district (about 64%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms normally have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 28% of households in the W11 postcode district, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

W11 is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

Kensington: Near listed buildings like The Tower House, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Kensington, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a family home near St Barnabas and St Philip's CofE Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Boards, parts and paint

Hanging rails

Long rails need support so they don’t bend under heavy coats to carry a full load. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat.

Tips worth knowing

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Is bespoke worth it?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.

Questions from W11

Do you cover W11?

Yes. We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and that includes W11.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You will get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

How do I get started?

The first step is to get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We talk it through during the design visit.
