How we make fitted wardrobes for W9
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. Most enquiries start with too little room for clothes and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
How our quotes work
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across W9
Homes across W9, City of Westminster, Kilburn and Westbourne included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Fitted wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. You choose the colour and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.
About 51% of the homes in the W9 postcode district went up before 1919, and about 16% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. More than half of the homes in the W9 postcode district (about 51%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. Purpose-built flats are home to about 68% of households in the W9 postcode district, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Homes across W9 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
Maida Vale: Close to Emslie Horniman's Pleasance? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary Magdalene, under half a mile south of the centre of Maida Vale, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Caring for painted furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes
Don’t pack clothes tight against the back panel where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.
When is bespoke worth it?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- The number of doors and drawers
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Parking and unloading on your street
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
Getting in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished, in the colour agreed with you. Give the paint time to cure fully.
Hanging rails
Long rails need support so they don’t bend under heavy coats when it carries winter coats. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?
Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, and the wardrobe is put together in the room. Tell us if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a written quote once we’ve measured up.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
