How we make alcove units for Lissenden Gardens

In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In a bedroom, it can become a small wardrobe or a linen cupboard, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. We ask what you want to store before we plan the inside, and set out the shelves and rails around it. Most enquiries start with everyday clutter left on show and space for a growing book collection, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around Lissenden Gardens date from then. Full-height alcove units can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Alcove units in Lissenden Gardens: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Lissenden Gardens, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 46 entries within half a mile of the centre of Lissenden Gardens. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and alcove units can be designed to work around them. About 50% of households in the neighbourhood around Lissenden Gardens live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Keats House, about 0.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For a flat near Gospel Oak station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Lissenden Gardens is in the London Borough of Camden, about 3 miles south-east of St Pancras. From period terraces to newer flats in Lissenden Gardens, we measure the room as it is and design around it. We cover places right across Camden.

Why people ask for alcove units in Lissenden Gardens

Sometimes it’s the clutter of a busy living room. Toys, games, paperwork and gadgets need somewhere to go, and cupboards with doors keep them out of sight. Open shelves above are left for the things you like to see.

Alcove units can help with:

  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Shelving for books and records
  • Bowed walls and sloping floors
  • Units that sit well with original features

If your home is one of the older houses near Highgate Road Chapel, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, panels and the faces you see. It is a sensible choice where an alcove sits against an external wall.

Shelves

Shelf thickness depends on the span and the load. Wider alcoves and heavy books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support.

FAQs: alcove units in Lissenden Gardens

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gospel Oak station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Lissenden Gardens?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

What paint finish can I have on alcove units?

There are two options: a spray-painted finish done in our workshop, or a hand-painted finish done on site. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spray painting is smooth and even, while hand painting is easy to touch up.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

It depends on the room and the look you want. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice. We agree the height during the design visit.

What happens to the chimney vent when alcove units go in?

Any vent is kept clear in the design. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp, which protects the units as well as the wall. If there’s damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what fitting day involves before we start.

What affects the price in Lissenden Gardens

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What to send when you contact us

These details help when you get in touch:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You send us a few details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, checking how far the walls are out of square.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls, so they sit tight to the chimney breast.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice

Why bespoke in Lissenden Gardens?

To be fair, a standalone bookcase or cabinet can go with you to your next home. Built-in units become part of the room and are left behind when you go. It depends on how long you expect to stay. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
