Our fitted wardrobes across NW3
Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there is height and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns an awkward corner into storage. Most enquiries start with musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and storage boxes stacked under the bed; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.
What goes into your quote
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Why work with us
- Saturday work by prior arrangement
- A design visit, then a written quote
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- A spray or hand-painted finish

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across NW3: local notes
Across NW3, including Hampstead, West Hampstead and Kentish Town, bedrooms come in every size. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.
The biggest shares of homes in NW3 were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 53% of homes in the NW3 postcode district were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms typically have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 31% of households in the NW3 postcode district, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
NW3 is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.
Hampstead: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Institute of St Marcellina, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Kilburn Grange Park, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
Practical tips
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Tell us which walls face outside
Hang clothes evenly along each rail rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.
Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
How we price fitted wardrobes
There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How big the furniture is
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Getting in touch
These details help when you get in touch:
- How you want to use the space
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Examples of the look you are after
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted or hand painted. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
What it is made from
Plinths and scribe strips
In period rooms, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front, depending on the look you prefer. Inside drawers keep the front simple.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in NW3
How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in NW3?
The first step is to tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
What are your fitted wardrobes made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.
