How we make wall beds for Lissenden Gardens
We fit wall beds in Lissenden Gardens and across London. It starts with a design visit to measure the room and check the wall, followed by a quote. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know beforehand. Typical reasons to get in touch are a flexible room for a growing family and a real mattress for visitors, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Lissenden Gardens date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Questions from Lissenden Gardens
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Lissenden Gardens?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Lissenden Gardens?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you work outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. We don’t plaster or decorate. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Flats, leases and landlords
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- We start with what the room is for, day and night. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
- At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and go through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish.
- The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Caring for painted furniture
People planning wall beds often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
- Mention if the wall is a stud wall
- Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
- Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth only.
Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it’s useful to know about tight turns.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, and for occasional guests that may be enough. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which can make a small room usable. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
For families living near Parliament Hill School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live in a flat close to Gospel Oak station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Keats House, about 0.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area.
