Fitted wardrobes across N19: what to expect
An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room.
- We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
- We send a written quote.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
What goes into your quote
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Starting with a design visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Homes across N19 and their bedrooms
Homes across N19, Holloway, Upper Holloway and Nag's Head included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls and floor. You choose the colour and whether it is spray-painted or hand-painted.
About 55% of the homes in N19 went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. More than half of the homes in N19 (about 55%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 31% of households in N19 live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and N19 is part of that. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.
Upper Holloway: For families living near St John's Upper Holloway CofE Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a period home close to St Andrew's Whitehall Park, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Pricing fitted wardrobes in N19
The price for your room depends on:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The overall size of the piece
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Before the design visit
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What the furniture needs to hold
To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in N19
An awkward room is another reason. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
When is bespoke worth it?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Where other trades come in
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- Building work to create a loft room
- Decorating or plastering the room
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Questions from N19
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
