Lower Holloway Alcove Units

In Lower Holloway, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. We design your alcove unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days

An alcove can also take a small desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It’s a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. We plan the desk height and depth with you. If you are living with old alcove cupboards that have seen better days and space for a growing book collection, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Getting long pieces into a flat often takes the most planning. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Lower Holloway, the sections for alcove units are planned at the design visit, sized for the tightest point on the way in. Joins are positioned so they’re hidden once everything is in place.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the alcove unit we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

Is it time for alcove units?

Sometimes it’s the clutter of a busy living room. Toys, games, paperwork and gadgets need somewhere to go, and closed cupboards hide them away. The shelves above can then stay tidy.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess
  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house

For an older house near St David, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Clear the alcoves before the design visit if you can
  • Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
  • Note any vent or air brick on the chimney breast
  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, treat the units gently: lift things onto the shelves rather than sliding them, and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Spread heavy loads and keep the heaviest things on lower shelves. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for, so mention heavy collections when we plan the unit.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves, discuss the design and check the route from the street to the room. It’s useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

How to get a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Alcoves vary in depth, and the chimney breast decides how far a unit can come out. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want, whether that’s flush with the breast or a little shallower. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Your questions about alcove units in Lower Holloway

I live in a flat in Lower Holloway. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Lower Holloway?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Should both alcoves have the same units?

That depends on how you use the room. Alcoves are often different widths anyway, so each unit is made to its own measurements. They can match in style while doing different jobs.

How much will my alcove unit cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

We don’t do electrical work. If you want sockets moved or added, your electrician should do that before we fit, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We can plan cut-outs and cable routes in the units around them.
