Fitted Wardrobes in Lower Holloway

Fitted wardrobes in Lower Holloway: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made at our workshop and fitted by us.

  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Too little room for clothes

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Lower Holloway

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. If your home has musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and clothes with nowhere proper to go, fitted wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Most homes around Lower Holloway are purpose-built flats, whether in mansion blocks or newer developments. In a mansion block, bedrooms often keep their chimney breasts and tall ceilings, while modern flats tend to have plasterboard partitions. Either way, fitted wardrobes are fixed to suit the wall.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Lower Holloway

About 44% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Lower Holloway went up before 1919, and about 24% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Lower Holloway include The Clock Tower (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Presbytery (Grade II), under half a mile east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Islington is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Lower Holloway is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

Witanhurst, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Lower Holloway

Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

If you live in a flat close to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early

Hang clothes evenly along each rail instead of crowding one section. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

Questions we are often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Lower Holloway?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

It depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured not just the room: fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Ask for a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
