How we make fitted wardrobes for N5

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wardrobes that are full to bursting and no space in front for doors to swing.

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

What goes into your quote

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Why work with us

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across N5

N5 has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. The design follows the room, not a catalogue.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the N5 postcode district, with about 18% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than a third of the homes in the N5 postcode district (about 50%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 29% of households in the N5 postcode district live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Highbury: If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Union Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Empty the area where we’ll be working

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. Opening a window now and then helps.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Standard wardrobes can’t follow a slope. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

What we do not do

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we do not do:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in N5

For some, it is about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture, and everything has a place behind it.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How big the furniture is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in N5

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in N5?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes N5.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the doors hang true.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. In a leasehold flat, it is worth checking the lease first.
