Mayfair Alcove Units

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make alcove units for homes in Mayfair, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Alcoves that are wasted space

How we make alcove units for Mayfair

In a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast leaves an alcove on either side of it. Built-in alcove units put that space to work as cupboards and shelving that look as though they belong there. If your home in Mayfair has alcoves like these, each alcove gets a unit designed for it after we have measured them at a design visit. People usually come to us about walls too uneven for standard furniture and tired cupboards in the alcoves; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Mayfair, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these normally have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for alcove units. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the alcove unit we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

FAQs: alcove units in Mayfair

Is Mayfair in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes, we work across Westminster, Mayfair included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

I live near Bond Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Will alcove units block the chimney vent?

Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help stop damp and we design around it.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. We measure each alcove carefully at the measuring visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall, so there are no awkward gaps.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
  • Any structural work on the chimney breast

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Panelled or flat doors

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so alcove units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas.
  2. At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
  4. Once you’re happy, the units are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Mayfair homes and alcove units

About 51% of the homes in the streets around Mayfair went up before 1919, and about 20% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Mayfair is in the Mayfair Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Naval and Military Club, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to LITE Regal International School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Living in a block of flats near Bond Street station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the unit, while adjustable ones let you change heights later.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For alcove units, MDF gives crisp doors and smooth sides that take a spray or hand-painted finish evenly. The moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice next to a chimney breast.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With bought furniture you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site. They can match the walls, the woodwork or neither. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
