Fitted cupboards for your home in Mayfair

About our fitted cupboards in Mayfair

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most tricky places, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and using the full height of a room.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Mayfair, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. You receive a written quote for the cupboards.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, use our contact form.

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and they suit some rooms well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Storage in Mayfair homes: local notes

In the streets around Mayfair, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 51%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 23 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Mayfair. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Mayfair will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

For families living near LITE Regal International School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Near listed buildings like Naval and Military Club, less than half a mile south of the centre of Mayfair, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Bond Street station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Mayfair

My house in Mayfair is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Mayfair?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
