Alcove units for your home in North Hyde
How we make alcove units for North Hyde
One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It gives you a place to work without turning a room into an office. Desk height and depth are agreed with you, and leave a route for cables to reach the sockets. We make alcove units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about clutter with nowhere to go and walls too uneven for standard furniture.
You might live in a Victorian terrace, a 1930s semi, a mansion block or a recent flat, and a home in North Hyde could be any of these. Because walls and floors change with the age of a house, the design of alcove units starts at the measuring visit. A period house may need scribing to bowed walls, while a newer flat may need fixings for plasterboard.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Why bespoke in North Hyde?
Off-the-shelf units come in the colours the maker chose. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, either spray painted in the workshop or hand painted. They can match the walls, the woodwork or neither. Standalone furniture leaves gaps behind and above it that gather dust, and fitted furniture closes them, which makes cleaning simpler.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
North Hyde homes and alcove units
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around North Hyde were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of North Hyde is within about a quarter of a mile of the Canalside Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in North Hyde joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If your children go to Norwood Green Infant and Nursery School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live near Minet Country Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is one of the older houses near St Leonard's Church, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

Common questions about alcove units
Do you cover homes near Southall station?
Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in North Hyde?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Do both alcove units have to match?
That is your choice. A matching pair balances the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, such as the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. It is easy to touch up later.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF does not have a grain to show through the paint, so a painted finish looks even and calm. We choose the moisture-resistant grade for fitted furniture.

What else we make in North Hyde
From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the measuring visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.
- You send us some details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
- We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
- We send a written quote for the units.
- Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
- The units are fitted in your home and scribed to follow the walls.
Preparing the room
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
