Alcove units in Osterley
A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help stop damp. Units are planned so any vent stays clear. If there are signs of damp on the chimney breast or in the alcoves, they’re best sorted before fitting. If your home has room to work in an alcove and shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Osterley, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for alcove units. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

From workshop to your room
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.
- You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill, with a note of the room they’re in.
- We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors.
- A written quote follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Advice
Questions from Osterley
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Osterley?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Do you make alcove units for homes in Osterley?
Yes, Osterley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hounslow and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
How long does it take to fit alcove units?
The time on site depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting, scribing and finishing.
Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?
It depends on the room and the look you want. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice, or run to the ceiling for a built-in look. We agree the height at the measuring visit.
How do I get a quote?
Just send us a few details through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
Can you fit a desk into an alcove?
Yes. You can have a desk in one alcove and cupboards in the other if you want the two sides to differ. The desk is planned around the way you work.
Pricing alcove units in Osterley
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The internal fittings
- The width and height of the space
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit.
Getting in touch
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Examples of the look you’re after
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
- Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice
- Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
- Sort out damp patches before fitting
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, go gently with the new paintwork, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.
Put coasters or mats under anything that holds water. Wipe up spills straight away.
Do you need alcove units in Osterley?
A chimney breast without its fireplace can leave a wall that feels unfinished. A pair of alcove units frames it and gives the wall a sense of order.
Alcove units can help with:
- Shelving for books and records
- Alcoves that are not square
- Toys and paperwork with no proper home
- Storage that suits a period room
Close to Inwood Park? Alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
