Fitted wardrobes across TW5: what to expect

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

What goes into your quote

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Local landmarks in Heston

We fit furniture in homes around Heston Community School, Westbrook Primary School and The Plough Public House, among other places. You will also find Inwood Park (1.6 miles south-east) and St Leonard's Church (less than half a mile east). The nearest railway station is Southall station, about 1.4 miles north of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Hounslow Hospital (1.2 miles south) and Treaty Centre (1.3 miles south-east). Green spaces nearby include Garden Lake.

Homes across TW5 and their bedrooms

TW5 has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. The design follows the room, not a catalogue.

The biggest shares of homes in TW5 were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Around a third of the homes in the TW5 postcode district (about 37%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 41% of households in the TW5 postcode district live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Homes across TW5 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

Heston: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Leonard, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Osterley House, about 1.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

How we price fitted wardrobes

What you pay depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. You can paint the edge or leave the layers showing.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished, in the colour agreed with you. Give the paint time to cure fully.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Not enough hanging space
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat. Let us know if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop before we come to fit them.

What materials do you use?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Do you cover TW5?

Yes, we do. We work in TW5 and across Hounslow.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We plan it with you when we visit.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
