Window Seats in North Hyde

Thinking about window seats in North Hyde? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • A bay window that is hard to furnish
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it

Window seats in North Hyde

Window seats in North Hyde: what you get

Lots of period homes across London have sash windows. A seat beneath one needs to sit below the cill so the window still opens and closes easily. Where there are working shutters, the seat must leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the design visit in North Hyde. Typical reasons to get in touch are a period room that needs furniture to suit it and a nursery or bedroom short of storage, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Whether your home in North Hyde is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there’s often a corner or recess not doing much. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Fitting day, step by step

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It’s useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

How we price window seats

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is
  • The overall size of the piece

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Examples of the look you’re after

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

What prompts window seats in North Hyde

Storage is another big reason. Under the seat there is room for blankets, toys, books and more. It adds storage without taking up more of the floor.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • A recess under the window doing nothing
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay

If you live near Minet Country Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Questions from North Hyde

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in North Hyde?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in North Hyde?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?

Yes. A radiator under the window is common, and the seat is designed to work with it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Storage above a radiator stays warm, so it suits things that don’t mind that.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Window seats in North Hyde: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 29% of the housing in the streets around North Hyde, with about 26% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. The Canalside Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of North Hyde. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around North Hyde (about 26%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war homes often have wide windows with radiators below, so a window seat needs a grille or open front to keep the heat moving.

For families living near Norwood Green Infant and Nursery School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If your home is one of the older houses near St Leonard's Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there’s a radiator, part of the front is a grille. It is painted to match the other fronts. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or panels.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on grilles as well as flat fronts. It’s carried out in the workshop for an even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

Practical tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Think about what you will store under the seat
  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Consider adding shelving around the seat

Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You’ll know it all works as it should.

Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, fill in our short enquiry form and describe what’s happening.
