What we don’t do
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it

About our alcove units in Brentford
Even a chimney that is been blocked or capped needs some ventilation to help keep damp out of the breast. Units are planned so any vent stays clear, with nothing covering it. If there are signs of damp on the chimney breast or in the alcoves, they’re best sorted before fitting. People typically come to us about room to work in an alcove and clutter with nowhere to go, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are normally already fixed in place. Many homes around Brentford are from those years, so alcove units are normally designed around what’s already there. Any new socket is a job for your electrician.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Why people ask for alcove units in Brentford
A chimney breast without its fireplace can leave a wall that feels unfinished. Units on both sides frame the chimney breast and balance the room, whether or not the fireplace is used.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Somewhere to keep books and records
- Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
- A desk that tucks into an alcove
- Units that sit well with original features
For an older house near Congregational Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

FAQs: alcove units in Brentford
Is Brentford in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes. Brentford is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Brentford station?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what to expect before we arrive.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
Can an alcove unit include a desk?
Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there is less painting to do in your home. Give the paint time to cure fully once fitted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF doesn’t have a grain to show through the paint, so a painted finish looks even and calm. Moisture-resistant MDF is what we use for fitted work.
Is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke furniture is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and time in the workshop. What you get is a unit planned for your alcove. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.
- You contact us with some details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
- At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square. Then we go through the design together.
- We send the design, materials and finish in a quote in writing.
- In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
- At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Getting a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and alcove units can be designed to work around them. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.
If you live in a flat close to Brentford station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For families living near St Paul's CofE Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.
