Alcove Units in Feltham
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make alcove units for homes in Feltham, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Somewhere to keep books and records
- Walls too uneven for standard furniture
- Storage that suits a period room
Alcove units designed for your room
Alcove units in Feltham: what you get
Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are common in older rooms. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting for a tidy line around the room. We agree these details during the design visit, before anything is made. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room to work in an alcove and bowed walls and sloping floors.
A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so alcove units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Feltham, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A bespoke unit takes longer to arrive than something from a shop: there is a design visit, a quote and making time in the workshop. In return, the unit is planned for your alcove alone, not the nearest catalogue size. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, discuss the design and check the route from the street to the room. Parking is worth mentioning too, since a van often needs a permit or a paid bay in London.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
- On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.
How to prepare
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Arranging a design visit

Advice
Your questions about alcove units in Feltham
Does a conservation area in or near Feltham affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Feltham?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Will alcove units block the chimney vent?
Any vent is kept clear in the design. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp, which protects the units as well as the wall. If there’s damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.
How do I get a quote?
Just drop us a line using the contact form. It’s useful to send rough measurements and a few photos, and we will arrange a design visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Is it time for alcove units?
A chimney breast without its fireplace can leave a wall that feels unfinished. A pair of alcove units frames it and gives the wall a sense of order, whether or not the fireplace is used.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Space for a growing book collection
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
- Toys and paperwork with no proper home
- Bowed walls and sloping floors
For a flat near Feltham station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Real projects you can actually look at
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
When you need someone else
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
- Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work

Living-room carpentry in Feltham: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 36% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Feltham, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Feltham include Red Lion Inn (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and Feltham House (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in Feltham joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If your children go to St Lawrence Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
