Alcove units in Surbiton Park, Kingston upon Thames
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make alcove units for homes in Surbiton Park, each designed at a visit to your home.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
About our alcove units in Surbiton Park
Some alcoves suit a full-height unit, with doors from floor to ceiling. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, and set out the shelves and rails around it. If your home has clutter with nowhere to go and alcoves that aren’t square, that’s what alcove units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
You might live in a Victorian terrace, a 1930s semi, a mansion block or a recent flat, and a home in Surbiton Park could be any of these. Each brings different walls and floors, so the design of alcove units starts with a look at what you have. A period house may need scribing to bowed walls, while a newer flat may need fixings for plasterboard.
We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Your questions about alcove units in Surbiton Park
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you make alcove units for a home in Surbiton Park?
Yes. Surbiton Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.
How long are you in the house for the fitting?
The fitting depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll explain what to expect before we arrive.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
How tall should alcove units be?
It depends on the room and the look you want. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. We agree the height at the design visit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Built-in living-room furniture in Surbiton Park
About 33% of the homes in the area around Surbiton Park went up before 1919, and about 20% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Surbiton Park, 17 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are more common around Surbiton Park than across Kingston upon Thames: about 45% of households, against about 30%, the 2021 Census shows. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.
If your children go to St Andrew's and St Mark's CofE Junior School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If you live near Hampton Court Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is one of the older houses near St John's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Surbiton Park is about 1 mile north of Kingston upon Thames, in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Surbiton Park is part of that. We cover places right across Kingston upon Thames, large and small.

What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts with a short message from you about the alcoves.
- At the design visit we measure up, agree the layout and talk about colour and finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
- A written quote follows, with the finish written in alongside the design and materials.
- We make the units in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls.
- Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.
Preparing the room
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Starting with a design visit
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
- Have any damp looked at before the units are made
- Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
Do not let stored things block the chimney breast vent. Air moving through the chimney helps keep damp away.
Use a mat under plants, vases and drinks, since standing water can mark painted shelves. Wipe up spills straight away.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
With no grain to show through, MDF keeps the painted surface smooth and even. We choose the moisture-resistant grade for fitted furniture.
Shelves
How thick a shelf needs to be depends on how wide the alcove is and what it holds. For a wide span or heavy books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip on the front or a support.
