About fitted wardrobes in KT6

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. Typical reasons to get in touch are gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and wardrobes that are full to bursting, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A written quote follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Bedroom storage across KT6

Across KT6, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

In the KT6 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Around a third of the homes in the KT6 postcode district (about 35%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 40% of households in the KT6 postcode district live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in KT6 are well within our area. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

Surbiton: If your children go to Lime Tree Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a flat close to Surbiton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in KT6

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there’s room to open them, hinged doors give full access. Sliding doors suit narrow rooms.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

It’s made at our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. If you’re in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do you work outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
