Alcove units in Seething Wells

About our alcove units in Seething Wells

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope, sometimes all in one recess. We make each unit in our workshop to the measurements we take, then scribe it on site, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about cupboards in keeping with an older house and walls too uneven for standard furniture.

Windows, doors, radiators and sockets decide where furniture can and can’t go. In any home in Seething Wells, those set the layout for alcove units before anything else. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Tell us about parking and access during the design visit
  • Check whether there’s a vent in the chimney breast
  • Note the sizes of large things you want to store
  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling

Once the cupboards are filled and in daily use, a door may settle slightly. Hinges can typically be adjusted to bring a door back in line, which deals with a door that starts to catch.

Avoid placing a heater hard up against the units, because constant heat is not kind to a painted finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Surbiton station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Seething Wells?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. Ideally it’s done before fitting. We then plan cut-outs and cable gaps around them.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

What we don’t do

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Built-in living-room furniture in Seething Wells

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Seething Wells were built before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 20 entries within half a mile of the centre of Seething Wells. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Kingston upon Thames has its own. Depending on your street in Seething Wells, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Hampton Court Palace, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. If you live in a flat close to Surbiton station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to St Andrew's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift as well as the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that’s what you chose.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

With bought furniture you are limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you pick, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site. They can match the walls, the woodwork or neither. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
