Materials and finishes

Shelves

Shelves can be fixed in place or set on adjustable supports. Fixed shelves help brace the unit, while adjustable ones let you change heights later.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. Small marks are easy to touch up, and it gives a softer, traditional look.

Alcove units in Hook: what you get

Most Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses have a chimney breast in the main rooms, with an alcove on each side. Alcove units turn that space into cupboards and shelves that look as though they belong there. Where a room in Hook has a pair of alcoves, we design a unit for each one. People normally come to us about a desk that tucks into an alcove and somewhere to keep books and records, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In an area like Hook, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits alcove units along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make alcove units for a home in Hook?

Yes, Hook is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chessington North station?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

Any vent is kept clear in the design. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry, which protects the units as well as the wall. If there is damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.

Will alcove units fit if my walls aren’t straight?

Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level, then discuss the design with you.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the units, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
  5. On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster.

How to get a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Why people ask for alcove units in Hook

A bedroom’s alcoves are often the best place for a wardrobe. A fitted alcove cupboard holds clothes without filling the floor, which helps in a small bedroom.

Here’s what alcove units can help with:

  • A desk that tucks into an alcove
  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Shelving for books and records

For a flat near Chessington North station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Hook homes and alcove units

In the streets around Hook, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hook include Orchard Court (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 35% of homes in the streets around Hook were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so alcove units often run along a full wall, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

The wider area includes historic houses like Fitznells Manor, about 2.6 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. If your children go to St Paul's CofE Primary School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Hook is within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, about 3 miles north of Kingston upon Thames. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Hook included. We list Hook among 16 places we cover in Kingston upon Thames.

Design visits and fitting in KT9, KT6 and KT10 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether you live on a street like Elm Road, Moor Lane and Glen Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for alcove units. Hook is near the A243; on busy main roads, unloading alcove units takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for alcove units include Barwell (1 mile south-west) and Seething Wells (2 miles north). We also make alcove units in nearby places like Kingston upon Thames (3 miles north), Surbiton (2 miles north), New Malden (3 miles north-east), Hampton Wick (3 miles north), Norbiton (3 miles north) and Tolworth (2 miles north-east).

Local landmarks in Hook

Our area takes in the homes around Southborough High School and Shrewsbury House School and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in Hook itself: Chessington North station. Nearby you’ll also find Tolworth Hospital (1.1 miles north-east) and Chessington Castle Hill (1 mile south-east). For a walk, there is Bonesgate Open Space.

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
