Loft storage in Surbiton Park: what you get
Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so every section made at our workshop fits up the stairs. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Surbiton Park. Most enquiries start with a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe and a dormer that isn’t being used; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Whether your home in Surbiton Park is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there’s usually a space that could work harder. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What it’s made from
Doors and drawer fronts
Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. The angled fronts match the ceiling, keeping the lines neat.
Birch plywood
Drawers in the knee wall can carry heavy things, from boxes to bedding. That’s why we make drawer boxes from birch plywood. It works well for longer shelves too.
How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. We plan the details of the day during the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
- We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Ask for a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Advice
FAQs: loft storage in Surbiton Park
Does a conservation area in or near Surbiton Park affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near Surbiton station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
What are your eaves cupboards made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What do eaves cupboards cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How long does it take to fit loft storage?
The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Roman Catholic Church of St Raphael, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Surbiton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to St John's Church, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Boards, parts and finishes
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Sloped wardrobe tops
- Eaves doors and drawers
- Moisture-resistant MDF
What it costs
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- The width and height of the space
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Helping us understand the room
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Your postcode and the borough
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Examples of the look you are after
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
