Fitted wardrobes across SW1P: what to expect

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and too little room for clothes.

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

What affects the price in SW1P

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Bedroom storage across SW1P

Across SW1P, including Kennington, Victoria and Little Portugal, bedrooms come in every size. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.

In SW1P, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 32%) and the years since 2000 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Around a third of the homes in SW1P (about 31%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. About 73% of households in the SW1P postcode district live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

SW1P is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Westminster: For a family home near Harris Westminster Sixth Form, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. The wider area includes historic houses such as Clarence House, about 0.4 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

When you need someone else

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls

Before and after fitting day

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then to keep them running smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The internal fittings
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The overall size of the piece

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a written quote follows.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How parking will work on your street
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the design visit.

Questions from SW1P

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
