Fitted cupboards for homes in Victoria

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option for putting shoes on by the door. If you’re living with a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and using the full height of a room, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With a large share of homes around Victoria built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Storage in Victoria homes: local notes

About 48% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Victoria went up before 1919, and about 18% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Grosvenor Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Victoria. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 48% of homes in the neighbourhood around Victoria were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses of that age have plenty of recesses, from hallway nooks to alcoves, and walls that are rarely straight, with each one scribed to the wall.

The wider area includes historic houses like Buckingham Palace, about 0.4 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. For an older house near St. Michael's Church, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. If your children go to St Peter's Eaton Square CofE Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Point out anything that needs access

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Much of London has controlled parking, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.

What we do not do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Any plumbing in a utility room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Victoria

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Victoria?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Victoria?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
