Alcove units in Walworth
How we make alcove units for Walworth
One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It’s a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. We plan the desk height and depth with you, with a gap or hole planned so cables can reach the sockets. If your home has space for a growing book collection and everyday clutter left on show, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Most homes around Walworth are purpose-built flats, so the route in is part of the plan. Each piece is built in sections that fit the stairs, the lift and the doorways, and assembled and fitted in place. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Questions from Walworth
Is parking a problem for fitting in Walworth?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
I live in a flat in Walworth. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Can you build alcove units for alcoves that aren’t square?
Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. A plinth or adjustable feet set it level on a sloping floor.
How long does it take to fit alcove units?
The time on site depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.
What we don’t do
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
- Finding and fixing the cause of damp
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.
- You let us know which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
- At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
- We send a written quote setting out the layout, materials and finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
- The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
The problems alcove units solve
A bedroom’s alcoves are often the best place for a wardrobe. A fitted alcove cupboard holds clothes without filling the floor, which matters in a smaller room.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- Units that sit well with original features
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
- Tired cupboards in the alcoves
- Somewhere to keep books and records
Close to Nursery Row Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
Choosing a carpenter
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Practical tips
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
- Mention parking and access when we visit
- Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
- Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
To clean painted units, a soft cloth that is barely damp is enough. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can dull or mark the paint. Wipe it dry when you’ve finished.
Spread heavy loads and keep the heaviest things on lower shelves. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for.
Alcove units for homes in Walworth
Homes built since 2000 make up about 33% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Walworth, with about 27% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 43 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Walworth. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and alcove units can be designed to work around them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Peter, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Living in a block of flats near Elephant & Castle station? Then alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
