Alcove units designed for your room

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

About our alcove units in Denmark Hill

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope, sometimes all in one recess. We make each unit in our workshop to the measurements we take, then scribe it on site, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. If your home has shelving for books and records and standard units leaving gaps at the sides, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Mansion block flats tend to have tall ceilings and walls that wander, whereas newer blocks are more likely to have plasterboard partitions. Most households around Denmark Hill live in purpose-built flats, old or new, so we check what each wall is made of before planning alcove units. Tall pieces are fixed back securely, whichever wall it is.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Questions from Denmark Hill

I live near Denmark Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is Denmark Hill in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes, we work across Southwark, Denmark Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How do I get a quote?

Just drop us a line using the contact form. It’s useful to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. Spray painting gives a smooth, factory-like finish, while hand painting suits a softer, traditional look and is simple to touch up. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

How fitting works for alcove units

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas, even if the design is only a rough idea so far.
  2. At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
  3. You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
  5. We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Advice

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

With bought furniture you are limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you pick, either spray painted in the workshop or hand painted. They can match the walls, the woodwork or neither. In a flat, walls are often broken up by radiators, doors and sockets, and standard widths rarely fit between them. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Alcove units for homes in Denmark Hill

About 36% of the homes in the streets around Denmark Hill went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Denmark Hill is partly covered by the Camberwell Grove Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in Denmark Hill needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Living in a block of flats near Denmark Hill station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to St Matthew's Camberwell, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near Lyndhurst Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Boards, parts and paint

Shelves

Shelf thickness depends on the span and the load. Wider alcoves and heavy books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. Its height can match the skirting board.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
  • Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice
  • Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear

A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted units typically need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong cleaning sprays, as they can mark the finish. Wipe it dry when you’ve finished.

Watch for damp marks on the chimney breast or the walls near the units. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide.
