Alcove units for homes in Surrey Canal

About 37% of the homes in the streets around Surrey Canal went up since 2000, and about 34% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Surrey Canal, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Augustine (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-west, and The Kentish Drovers Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Surrey Canal (about 37%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor.

Close to Deptford Park? Alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Queen's House, about 2.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

How we make alcove units for Surrey Canal

Some alcoves suit a full-height unit, with doors from floor to ceiling. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, so shelves and rails go where they’re needed. Most enquiries start with a desk that tucks into an alcove and space for a growing book collection, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Surrey Canal date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. Alcove units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting works for alcove units

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, with a note of the room they’re in.
  2. We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the units in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.

Advice

The problems alcove units solve

A move into an older home is a common reason. People who have just moved in want storage that suits the age of the house, and the alcoves are an obvious place to start. It is easier to do before the room fills with boxes.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Storage that suits a period room
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Shelving for books and records
  • Clutter with nowhere to go

If your home is one of the older houses near St Katharine with St Bartholomew, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bespoke furniture is not instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and making time in the workshop. What you get is a unit planned for your alcove. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why choose us

  • Scribed to uneven walls

Your questions about alcove units in Surrey Canal

Is Surrey Canal in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes, we work across Lewisham, Surrey Canal included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

I live in a flat in Surrey Canal. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Alcove units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
  • Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
  • Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly

Once the cupboards are filled and in daily use, a door may settle slightly. Hinges can normally be adjusted to bring a door back in line, which deals with a door that starts to catch.

Avoid placing a heater hard up against the units, because constant heat is not kind to a painted finish.

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Helping us understand the room

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
