Need under-stairs storage in Walworth?
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Under-stairs storage for homes in Walworth
No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That is something a standard unit cannot do, in Walworth or anywhere else. Most enquiries start with stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and no room for a small desk or a place to work; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
With most households around Walworth in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern developments are both possible. Older mansion block flats can have bays, long corridors and tall ceilings with space to use, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Big standalone units do not always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. It is then put together in the room.
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Questions we are often asked
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Walworth?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Walworth?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How much will my under-stairs cupboard cost?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we have measured up.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Making use of tricky spaces in Walworth
In the neighbourhood around Walworth, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 33%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 43 entries within half a mile of the centre of Walworth. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 27% of homes in the neighbourhood around Walworth were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so under-stairs cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.
For a family home near Robert Browning Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live in a flat close to Elephant & Castle station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 1.6 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.
Walworth is in the London Borough of Southwark, about 2 miles south of East Dulwich. Anywhere in Walworth, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We list Walworth among 21 places we cover in Southwark.
In SE1P, SE17 and SE1, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We also cover Bermondsey (1 mile north-east), Camberwell (1 mile south), South Bermondsey (1 mile east), Denmark Hill (2 miles south) and Surrey Canal (2 miles east). Across the rest of Southwark, our area takes in East Dulwich (2 miles south), Herne Hill (2 miles south), Peckham (2 miles south-east), Rotherhithe (2 miles east), Surrey Quays (2 miles east) and Nunhead (3 miles south-east).

What we do not do
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Pull-out drawers
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
How fitting day works
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.
- You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you.
- You receive a quote in writing for the storage we’ve discussed, for you to read through.
- We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.
