How we make fitted wardrobes for SE1

The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves in the bedroom and no space in front for doors to swing; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

How our quotes work

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Fitted wardrobes across SE1: local notes

Across SE1, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have.

Homes built since 2000 make up about 38% of the housing in the SE1 postcode district, with about 21% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 38% of homes in SE1 were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. About 80% of households in the SE1 postcode district live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, SE1 included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.

Bermondsey: For a flat near London Bridge station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Roman Catholic Church of The Most Holy Trinity, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in SE1

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, so you get more storage from the same floor space.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

In period rooms, we typically scribe the sides and the top. It’s what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting, for plain or panelled doors alike.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff. Clear anything that falls into it.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in SE1

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in SE1?

Yes. We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, SE1 included.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Which boards do you build with?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. The materials are named in your written quote.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
