Loft storage designed for your room

About our loft storage in West Dulwich

Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it’s low. It uses the full height of the room. We’ll plan it during the design visit in West Dulwich. If your home has a loft room that still feels unfinished and a loft room with too many jobs, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

A good share of the homes around West Dulwich were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war homes typically have squarer rooms and fewer nooks than period ones, so eaves cupboards often create the storage the house never had. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. Our storage is made in sections sized for the route. That makes it possible to fit large pieces in a small loft. Off-the-shelf furniture tends to leave gaps at the ends of a wall and space above it, which fitted furniture uses. Every width is made for the room.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in West Dulwich

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from loft storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Think about how you will reach into the eaves
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. A quick sort every so often helps. Heavy boxes are best kept low.

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Electrical work in the loft
  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion
  • Building work to turn a loft into a room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Eaves doors and drawers

FAQs: loft storage in West Dulwich

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in West Dulwich?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you make loft storage for a home in West Dulwich?

Yes, we work across Southwark, West Dulwich included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Storage in West Dulwich homes: local notes

About 38% of the homes in the neighbourhood around West Dulwich went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 28% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. The Dulwich Village Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Dulwich. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home in West Dulwich is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Kingswood House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Long Meadow? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Stephen, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Where the building has a caretaker or managing agent, it helps to tell them before fitting day. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
