Alcove Units in Elephant and Castle

Alcove units designed for your room

Why bespoke in Elephant and Castle?

Off-the-shelf units come in the colours the maker chose. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, either spray painted in the workshop or hand painted. They can match the walls, the woodwork or neither. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Alcove units in Elephant and Castle

In a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast leaves an alcove on either side of it. Alcove units turn that space into cupboards and shelves that sit as part of the room. Where a room in Elephant and Castle has a pair of alcoves, we design a unit for each one. Most enquiries start with shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess and room to work in an alcove, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are typically already fixed in place. Many homes around Elephant and Castle are from those years, so alcove units are normally designed around what’s already there. If you want an extra socket, that’s for your electrician, and we leave space and cable routes for it.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan alcove units. They help before and after fitting:

  • Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
  • Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player

A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted units normally need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can dull or mark the paint. Wipe it dry when you’ve finished.

Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight.

How we price alcove units

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The overall size of the piece

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

FAQs: alcove units in Elephant and Castle

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Elephant and Castle?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Elephant and Castle affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted finish in your home. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. You can have a desk in one alcove and cupboards in the other, or matching desks in both. The desk is planned around the way you work.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

That is a job for your electrician. Ideally it is done before fitting so the sockets line up with the design. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Alcove units for homes in Elephant and Castle

In the streets around Elephant and Castle, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 30 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Elephant and Castle. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 80% of households around Elephant and Castle live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Southwark as a whole, about 64%, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St George the Martyr, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Newington Gardens, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill, with a note of the room they’re in.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the units in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that is what you chose.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Why people ask for alcove units in Elephant and Castle

Moving into a period house often prompts it. New owners want storage that suits the house, and the alcoves are the natural place for it. It’s easier to do before the room fills with boxes.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • Room to work in an alcove

Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
