Fitted cupboards in West Dulwich

In many London hallways, space is tight, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath for putting shoes on by the door. Most enquiries start with cupboards for a utility or boot room and landing shelves for bedding and towels; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Post-war housing makes up a good share of the homes around West Dulwich, and in London that can mean houses or flats in blocks. In a house of that age, the stairs often have a cupboard below that can be reworked, while flats tend to have hallways and recesses worth using. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay reachable, with the clearances their makers set out.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Fitted cupboards for homes in West Dulwich

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 38% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Dulwich, with about 28% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 22 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of West Dulwich. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 38% of homes in the neighbourhood around West Dulwich were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so fitted cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Stephen, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 0.2 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access

Meter and fuse board cupboards work best when they stay easy to open. Avoid packing things in front of the meters, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it’s worth doing before the design is agreed.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Moving or servicing a boiler

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.

  1. You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the cupboards.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Starting with a design visit

Questions from West Dulwich

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in West Dulwich?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near Sydenham Hill station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.
