Alcove units for homes in West Wickham

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, often all at once. We make each unit in our workshop to the measurements we take, then scribe it on site, so the edges follow the plaster instead of leaving a gap. A plinth or adjustable feet take up any slope in the floor. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bowed walls and sloping floors and worn or badly fitted alcove units.

In an area like West Wickham, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits alcove units along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan alcove units. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Deal with any damp on the chimney breast first
  • Mention parking and access when we visit
  • Clear the alcoves before the design visit if you can
  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards

Once the cupboards are filled and in daily use, a door may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to line the doors up again.

Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight and adjust a door before a small rub becomes a mark.

What affects the cost of alcove units

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The overall size of the piece

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

West Wickham homes and alcove units

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 63% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Wickham, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Wickham include The Swan Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile east, and The White Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in West Wickham is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Addington Palace, about 1.6 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your home is one of the older houses near St Francis of Assisi, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to West Wickham station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

West Wickham is about 5 miles east of Orpington, within the London Borough of Bromley. West Wickham is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Across Bromley, we cover West Wickham and the places around it.

Design visits and fitting in BR4, CR0 and BR3 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street like Ash Road, Kent Road and Oak Avenue, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for alcove units. Nearby, we also make alcove units in Coney Hall (1 mile south), Spring Park (1 mile west), Eden Park (1 mile north), Hayes (1 mile east) and Addington (1 mile south). We also make alcove units in nearby places like Orpington (5 miles east), Bromley (2 miles north-east), Beckenham (2 miles north), St Mary Cray (6 miles east), Chislehurst (4 miles north-east) and Penge (3 miles north-west).

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf units can work in an alcove, and they typically cost less to buy. The catch is the fit: standard widths rarely match the recess, and uneven walls make every gap obvious. A bespoke alcove unit is made to your measurements and scribed to the plaster. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Common questions about alcove units

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Wickham station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in West Wickham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in West Wickham?

The first step is to use our contact form and tell us about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

Electrical work isn’t something we do. New or moved sockets are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting. We can plan cut-outs and cable routes in the units around them.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How tall should alcove units be?

That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. We agree the height at the design visit.
