Spring Park Alcove Units

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on alcove units in Spring Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Alcove units in Spring Park

We fit alcove units across Croydon and the rest of London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and go through the design. After that we send a quote in writing, and once you are happy the units are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. If your home has walls too uneven for standard furniture and shelving for books and records, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Spring Park, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, alcove units can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Note any vent or air brick on the chimney breast
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Make the alcoves easy to reach for measuring
  • Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, go gently with the new paintwork, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.

Every so often, check that hinges and handles haven’t worked loose, and adjust any door that starts to catch.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, panels and the faces you see. It is a sensible choice where an alcove sits against an external wall.

Hand-painted finish

With a hand-painted finish, you see the colour in your own light as it goes on. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.

Spring Park homes and alcove units

About 62% of the homes in the streets around Spring Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Spring Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Saints (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and The White Lodge (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Spring Park, let us know at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Living in a block of flats near West Wickham station? Then alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For a family home near Forest Academy, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live near Millers Pond, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Spring Park is part of the London Borough of Croydon, about 4 miles north-west of Thornton Heath. Anywhere in Spring Park, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Spring Park is one of the places in Croydon where we make alcove units, and the borough has 32 places on our list.

We make alcove units across CR0, BR4 and BR3 for alcove units. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Ash Road, Lake Road and Kent Road, along with the roads around them, for alcove units and any of our other fitted furniture. Nearby, we also make alcove units in Coney Hall (1 mile south-east), West Wickham (1 mile east), Eden Park (1 mile north), Shirley (1 mile west) and Monks Orchard (1 mile north-west). Elsewhere in Croydon, we also cover Thornton Heath (4 miles north-west), Croydon (3 miles west), Coulsdon (6 miles south-west), Purley (5 miles south-west), Broad Green (3 miles west) and Upper Norwood (4 miles north-west).

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, and we find a time for the design visit.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Your postcode and the borough

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Questions from Spring Park

Is Spring Park in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Spring Park is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Spring Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

That’s a job for your electrician. It’s best done before the units go in, and we can tell you where the units will sit so the sockets end up in the right place. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.
