Fitted wardrobes across N12: what to expect
The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It is useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about mismatched bedroom furniture and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes.
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
- We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
How our quotes work
We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Built around your room
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
Starting with a design visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.

Bedroom storage across N12
Homes across N12, Finchley, Whetstone and Friern Barnet included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls and floor. You choose the colour and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.
Homes built before 1919 make up about 32% of the housing in N12, with about 25% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 25% of homes in N12 date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.
N12 is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.
Whetstone: If you live in a period home close to Church of St John, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Swan Lane Open Space, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Will the quote be in writing?
What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light as it goes on. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.
When is bespoke worth it?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Honest limits
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Parking near your home
- Doors and drawers, and how many
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Getting in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- How you want to use the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form. The written quote follows the visit.
Questions we are often asked
Will you travel outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The fitting depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We’ll look at the room with you at the measuring visit.
