About our loft storage in Whetstone
A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. For a home in Whetstone, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. If you’re living with a new loft conversion that needs storage and boxes and suitcases with no home, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Whetstone, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What it is made from
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall and ceiling. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth does the same job at the floor.
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Angled fronts are cut to follow the slope, so the gaps stay even all the way along.
Is bespoke worth it?
With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, so it sits with the rest of the room. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Storage in Whetstone homes: local notes
About 32% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Whetstone went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Whetstone include Lawrence Campe Almshouses (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and St James's Primary School (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Whetstone (about 32%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have had their lofts converted, leaving sloping ceilings and eaves to use; we build the storage once the loft is converted or boarded.
If you live in a flat close to Oakleigh Park station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Queenswell Infant & Nursery School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. For an older house near Church of St John, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You let us know about the loft room.
- At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
- A quote in writing follows.
- The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
- The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
- Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.
How to prepare
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Questions from Whetstone
Is Whetstone in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes, Whetstone is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Whetstone?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
What do eaves cupboards cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.
How long is the fitting for eaves storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.
Can you get furniture up narrow loft stairs?
Measuring the route is part of the design visit. We size every section for the tightest turn, and the pieces are put together in the room.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
