How we make fitted wardrobes for N11
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do.
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, and we arrange a design visit.
- We visit to measure the room and discuss the design.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
What goes into your quote
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why householders in N11 choose us
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Built around your room
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Homes across N11 and their bedrooms
Across N11, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. The design follows the room, not a catalogue.
About 31% of the homes in the N11 postcode district went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 29% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 31% of homes in N11 date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. Of the 13 places we have local pages for in N11, 5 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Friern Barnet: For a flat near New Southgate station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John the Evangelist, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, handle the doors with care and do not scrub the surfaces.
Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust any door that starts to catch.
Pricing fitted wardrobes in N11
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- How square the room is
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, use our contact form.
Getting in touch
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
What we don’t do
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
What it is made from
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It is how a straight carcass meets a wall that is not straight.
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour before we start.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in N11
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How long will the fitting take?
How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.
Where is the furniture made?
Each piece is made at our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls, so the doors line up properly.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
